Generosity in Action December 2017: Karen Smith-Scott

Our Generosity in Action honoree this month is Karen Smith-Scott. Karen is a caring and vital part of our church community: She organizes our Social Hour, recruiting and training volunteers as well as providing food for the snack table. She is on the Keepers of the Church Committee, the Green Sanctuary Committee (ensuring that our kitchen is “green”), and is a worship associate. She offers wonderful auction items, including a tea party that members laud as being truly special. Finally, Karen stepped up to spearhead the Pride Parade this year, making sure our float sailed without a hitch! Thank you Karen, for all the fantastic work you do!

Generosity in Action: November 2017

Nancy RatnourNovember’s Geneoristy in Action honoree is Nancy Ratnour. Nancy has been part of the fundraising committee. As a talented artist, she has headed up the annual craft fair, contributing her own hand-crafted jewelry to help raise money for the church.

She also has been a part of the group that feeds the church cats on a regular basis. She is a big cat lover and advocate.

Nancy has had cancer for some time, and has received many treatments (including proton therapy which she is currently undergoing). However, she never complains, and she continues to grace us with her smiles, attend church functions and contribute her talents to our church community.

Next time you see Nancy, be sure to thank her for all she does!

Generosity in Action for November 2017

The Generosity in Action honoree for this month is Michael Plummer. A long-time member of our UUCJ family, Michael has been the invisible hand behind the development of the 2003, 2008, 2013, and the 2017 Triennial Members Surveys. He also handled a mini survey this year designed to determine congregational priorities. The survey results help our Board and the COM determine current conditions and align future plans and programs with congregants’ hopes and desires.

Mike’s unselfish sharing of his expertise is greatly appreciated as are his silent partners in the development of surveys; his wife Linda Plummer, and his daughter, Amanda, who helps with deciphering and categorizing hundreds of respondents’ comments.

Generosity in Action for July 2017

For July, our Generosity in Action nominee is Sunnie Baber! Sunnie is the chair of the Membership Committee, working hard to put together introductory materials for new members and making them feel welcome. She leads our songs during Sunday services, manages our social media, and has served on the Mission Funding Team. Sunnie also gives many hours to the church youth — she is an RE and nursery volunteer and an exemplary OWL teacher. She hosts the renowned Taco and Beer party every year for the Service Auction, and is, in Phillip’s own words, the church’s “minister wrangler”. Make sure to thank Sunnie for all of the tireless hours she puts into our beloved community!

Generosity in Action for June

The Bannister Family
This month we are honoring the Bannisters as for their Generosity in Action! They are always doing their part to build community, and continue to do so much for our church. Juzer leads the covenant groups, and Maria has joined the mission funding team. Almaas has always shown dedication and love in her service to RE. The Bannisters help out with social hour, and have hosted fabulous dinners for our service auctions. They always help out whenever there is a need, and there is no action of service too small or too big for them. We are blessed that this wonderful family is part of our community!

Generosity in Action for May 2017

David LaffitteThe honoree for May’s Generosity in Action is David Laffitte! David has organized and worked on many projects related to renewing and upgrading our church campus: He’s organized the Campus Condition Survey in 2015 and the roof repairs for the Sanctuary and North Wing. He’s worked with the Campus Renewal Group through the contracting of Cathy Duncan, and advised both the group and the architect during the process. He currently heads up the Campus Renewal Group to help set priorities for work on the campus, and the Keeper of the Church Group to verify that proposed changes are in the spirit of Bob Broward’s design. David is also working on getting proposals for lighting for the church and campus—especially for the parking lot. Let us all thank David for his tireless work in making our church a safe, welcoming and beautiful space!

April Generosity in Action

This month we recognize Tom Larson for Generosity in Action. A former Board member, he has been the chair of the Finance Committee for the past two years, and he is currently heading up the Staffing Task Force. Tom is known for being very organized, and we appreciate his meticulous dedication to the UUCJ community. Thank you, Tom, for everything you do!

Generosity in Action for February 2017

Christina RameyChristina Ramey has been instrumental in updating and revitalizing our online presence in Jacksonville in the past year. She has worked diligently on rebuilding our website as well as using her amazing skills for bringing marketing tools to UUCJ. Recently, Christina has agreed to further serve our beloved community by joining the UUCJ Board and heading up the Outreach Portfolio. She is an active member of the Fundraising Committee, volunteers in our Children’s RE activities, along with volunteering her time to assist in the church office. Christina is the first to offer her services in whatever capacity she can and generously gives her time and talent with so much obvious love you can’t help but want to join her in whatever she is participating in! Thank you Christina for your selfless contribution to UUCJ!

Generosity in Action for December 2016

Lois HoeftThis month we are recognizing Lois Hoeft for Generosity in Action. While we know she has served tirelessly as Board President these past two years, she has been involved in so much more at UUCJ: She chairs our ICARE committee, sits on the Campus Renewal Taskforce, and volunteers in Religious Education.

She is always willing to give her time in whatever way she can to the church. We all recognize her sweet smile in our community, and now we owe her our thanks for everything she does!

Generosity in Action: Donna Janesky

Donna JaneskyFor November’s Generosity in Action we are recognizing Donna Janesky. Donna contributes her time and talent to the church in so many ways: She chairs the Special Collection Committee, helps head up the Arlington Community Garden, and volunteers regularly at our partner school, Arlington Heights Elementary School. She runs the Ethical Eating Class, is head of the Partner Church Committee for our sister church in Bozod, and she leads the “unoffical” feral/stray cat feeding efforts out of her love of animals. Whew! If that wasn’t enough, we regularly see her at other volunteer efforts whenever help is needed at the church. We truly appreciate all of the effort that Donna makes puts into the betterment of our church community!
